Why we are doing this

Cancer is one of those things that seems so far away until it hits home. I am sure that many can relate. Two years ago, I lost my father to colon cancer – and those who have seen this first hand will know it was the most painful and awful way to see a loved one suffer. Six months is all he had. Six painful months of saying goodbye at least once a week.

He was not the first in my life; I have had friends (some way too young) and family come face to face with this scary disease.

This year, I was shaken to learn one of my oldest clients, and now a very dear friend, was diagnosed with breast cancer. Caroline is one of the healthiest, fittest people you will ever meet – running, swimming, biking, weight lifting, scuba diving and introducing me to many healthy food spots in the city.

Now, due to amazing progress in research and medicine over the last few years, hers is a better story:

[box] “When I signed up for the Toronto Triathlon Festival back in December and had the opportunity to raise money for the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation, I did not hesitate. Cancer is a cause close to my heart, one that has taken away too many of my loved ones. In the last six years I have lost my dad, both my in-laws and a close friend to cancer. My mother was also diagnosed with breast cancer in August of 2018.But it’s now personal. On February 20, it was my turn to sit with the doctor and hear the words ‘you have cancer.’ I had not one, but two separate malignant tumors in my right breast. It felt like I had just been punched in the gut. I was angry. We had gone through so much, we needed a break. I was scared. What if it had spread? What did it mean for the future? Why me?But everyone kept saying to me I was one of the lucky ones. It was caught early, and I was young and healthy. Ana put it best when she called this an “inconvenience.” So I decided to change my perspective and look at this as one chapter in the story of my life. I had surgery on March 4th and have now started my radiation treatments — 20 in total. I will be taking a medication called tamoxifen for five years and will also be monitored every six months for the next five years. The reason I decided to keep racing this summer is partly to keep a sense of normalcy. I am not trying to be a hero. Or win a race. I just want to feel normal. And my normal includes swimming, biking and running. And also because I have realized going through this how much cancer research is key. Five years ago, I would have had a mastectomy and chemotherapy. Now I get to keep both my boob and my hair.”[/box]

Caroline will be participating in the Toronto Triathlon Festival on July 21st – 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run!!! Wow! Talk about #beastmode

This is what keeps us moving forward. It is up to us to support foundations like The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation to continue doing the amazing work that they do, keeping our loved ones healthy!

I hope you will join us for this special charity bootcamp workout to support Caroline who is raising funds for PMCF through Toronto triathlon festival.

Tickets cost $20 per person (any additional donations are always welcome), and all proceeds will be donated to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. If you are unable to attend, but would still like to donate – of course we will take your money 🙂 AND mostly appropriate your generosity.

Build My Body Beautiful is happy match whatever donations are collected.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!
